Green Tip of the Week

Luxembourg taking a leading role in reducing plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is among one of the biggest threats to the global ecosystem, with a single plastic bag taking up to 500 years to decompose in landfill. While tackling this problem requires international efforts, Luxembourg is setting an example of concrete measures which lead to tangible results. The so-called operation eco-bag which started in Luxembourg in 2014 has prevented the unnecessary use of 475 million one-way shopping bags. The eco-bag is a steady reusable shopping bag which costs only 0.70 EUR and is available for sale in all Luxembourgish supermarkets.  If damaged, the eco-bag can be replaced for free.  For the period of 6 years (from 2006 to 20120), the quantity of one-away bags used in Luxembourg  has decreased from 454.4 tons (2006) to 57.9 tons (2012).  More information on this subject can be found on the website of Valorlux.

On the same website under the section The blue bag, for whom? you can also find handyinformation on theblue bags used to collect PMC waste in Luxembourg, including a sorting guide on what and what not you should put in the bag.
